Hello again, St. Columba School and Parish Family. By the time you’re reading this it will be (or will very soon be) Palm Sunday, the beginning of what the Church calls “Holy Week.” Holy Week is the most sacred part of our church calendar -- our liturgical year. This one week encapsulates every aspect of our faith: the institution of the Eucharist, the passion and death of Jesus, and his glorious resurrection.

Palm Sunday is actually two Sundays in one. First, we listen to the passage in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt. 21:1-11) where Jesus rides a donkey triumphantly into Jerusalem and is celebrated as a great prophet. People lay their cloaks on the road in front of him, others cut palm branches and lay them ahead of him, and they shout “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Then we process from the gym into the church, waving palm branches and singing “Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!” as a commemoration of this great event. (As an aside: we repeat that refrain about 7,526 times on our walk from the gym to the church.)

Palm Sunday continues once we get to the church, the singing stops and the mood immediately changes; we go from triumphant to somber, from joyful to sorrowful. We hear the first reading from the prophet Isaiah (Is. 50:4-7): “I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.” We sing the responsorial psalm (Ps. 22): “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” We hear the second reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Christians in Philippi (Phil. 2:6-11): “He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Finally, we reenact, through spoken word, Jesus’ passion and death according to the Gospel of Matthew (Mt. 26:14—27:66). Judas takes the 30 pieces of silver, the disciples meet for the Passover meal, they go out to the Mount of Olives to pray, and there Jesus is arrested and the disciples -- his closest friends -- all flee. Peter denies knowing him, he is questioned by Pilate, and then he hears the chants of the crowd: “Let him be crucified! Crucify him!” -- the same crowd who, just a week prior, were shouting “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Then Jesus is led away to Golgotha, nailed to a cross, and dies. At the point of his death, Jesus cries out "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" …The Gospel of the Lord.

What mental and emotional whiplash! In 35 minutes we've gone all the way from “Hosanna in the highest!” through “Crucify him!” to “My God, why have you forsaken me?” And so it probably felt for Jesus and the apostles as well. How great it must have felt for them to see Jesus -- their friend -- riding into Jerusalem to shouts of joy, and yet a week later suddenly the crowd has completely turned on him. It was a lot to take in for them and, indeed, they were still struggling to truly understand even after Jesus had risen from the dead (and with that in mind, let’s give ourselves some slack if we’re still struggling to “get it.”). Thankfully for us, the Church in her wisdom gives us another opportunity to take all of this a little more slowly and contemplate more deeply on all that has happened. The Sacred Paschal Triduum (“the three days”) is this opportunity.

Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil comprise what is called “The Pascal Triduum.” These are not three separate services but are actually one service that begins on Thursday night and ends on Saturday night. Each night highlights a significant aspect of our faith, our call, Jesus’ salvific work, and the love that God the Father has for all of his children. The entirety of our faith and God’s plan for salvation is laid out in these three days.

On Holy Thursday we remember the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, and the compassionate love Jesus showed to his disciples. Before they reclined at table, Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist, then he stooped down as a common servant would, and washed the feet of the disciples. This was unheard of, this was the work of the servant, not of the master! They were understandably confused so Jesus spelled it out for them: (Jn. 13:14-15) “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.” That lesson isn’t just for them, it’s for us too!

On Good Friday the whole church pauses. No sacraments are allowed on Good Friday -- no weddings, no funerals, no Mass, no confessions. The two exceptions are Viaticum (communion to the dying) and the distribution of Holy Communion at the Good Friday service. We gather on Good Friday to commemorate the passion of Jesus, to pray with specific intensity for the needs of the whole world, to venerate the cross (the symbol of our salvation), and to receive Holy Communion. The Good Friday service is not a Mass. In a Mass, the bread and wine we offer are changed into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, but this is not allowed on Good Friday. The service of Holy Communion on Good Friday is offered with the precious Body of Christ that was consecrated on Holy Thursday and reserved for this purpose.

Holy Saturday brings with it the Easter Vigil. This is the night of keeping vigil for the Lord where the faithful, carrying lighted candles, are like those looking for the Lord when he returns. During this service we hear the entirety of salvation history, the great and amazing ways God has bestowed his love upon his people, not once, not even twice, but four times. The first is the telling of salvation history through fire during the singing of the Exultet. This ancient chant offers praise for the blessed Paschal candle which represents for us the Light of Christ. The second is the telling of salvation history through the Word. During the Easter Vigil we hear seven readings from the old testament that lay out the entire plan of salvation: the creation of mankind, the sacrifice of Abraham, the exodus from Egypt through the Red Sea, the establishment of the new Jerusalem, the salvation freely offered to all, the fountain of wisdom, and the replacement of our “stony” hearts with hearts of flesh and spirit. Then we sing the “Glory to God,” which represents the birth of Jesus, our Savior (since those were the words the angels sang at his birth, you see). We then listen to Paul’s letter to the Romans (Rm. 6:3-11) where he exhorts them: “We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.” So we are risen to new life with Christ, as is then exemplified by the Gospel of the resurrection. The third telling of salvation history comes from the view of water in the Blessing of Baptismal Water proclaimed by Fr. John. Finally, in the Preface to the Eucharistic Prayer we hear a fourth telling of salvation history. Wow, no wonder it takes so long!

There’s so much to soak in during this week. If you’ve managed to read this far, I want to expressly invite you to attend as much of the Triduum as you possibly can! Come experience, yet again, the beauty of these liturgies. Come remember and celebrate the great love God has lavishly bestowed upon us in so many ways. Come experience the beauty of Holy Week and the Triduum.

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, in the words of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, bestowed upon Christians are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. CCC 1845

The gifts are “permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit” (CCC 1830). They are received in the soul along with sanctifying grace and remain in us as permanent dispositions to help us follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We lose them only when we lose the state of grace through mortal sin. Each of us may have different gifts. The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: “charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity.” (Gal 5:22-23 ) CCC 1832

The fruits of the Holy Spirit are very different from the gifts. The fruits are the effects in us of living a life according to the spirit, according to the will of God, a life of holiness. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are available to everyone who lives in the Spirit, and not in the flesh (Gal 5:19-21).

We have Food Pantry news! First of all, we thank Diane Wagenhals, who maintains the St. Columba Catholic Parish Food Pantry spreadsheet. By her efforts we are able report to you our ministry’s service for the first six months of 2025. Since January 1st, we have provided 527 families with 555 bags of food.

We have shared bags of food with individuals and families who have come to our pantry for food. We have also reached out and served families in collaboration with several nonprofit organizations: La Plata Family Centers Coalition, Fort Lewis College Grub Hub, Community Compassion Outreach, God’s Grace Ministry, and Lumien Apartments.

Second, we thank Michael Eckstein for helping us monitor the funds you all so generously donate every month. These funds are critical to helping us maintain well-stocked shelves of food. Thank you!!

Each bag we share is filled with nonperishable food that will help feed a family of four for a week. The cost per bag of food is still about $30, which is offset by your food donations each week.

And we now give praise, glory and gratitude to God our Father, for we know that none of these services would be possible without His abundant grace and your generous support.

On our wishlist this month is

canned soup (both regular and hearty soups), small boxes of cereal or oatmeal, and canned spaghetti sauce

. Please bring your food donations to mass with you and place them in the collection cart as you enter church. Again, we thank you so very much for your help!
If you prefer to help the Food Pantry with a monetary donation, please place your check in the collection basket and write “Food Pantry” on the memo line. Or, you can make a donation via St. Columba’s website. Thank you! We are truly blessed with your generous support of our Food Pantry.

The St Columba Campus Design Team has been busy in April, May, and June working with our architects to evaluate existing conditions on our campus with our mechanical, electrical, fire protection and plumbing engineers. We have also had visits from stained glass consultants and consulted with audiovisual and sound experts.

A new narthex gathering space with a new entrance will be added on the east side of the church to provide much needed space as we enter and are sent forth from our liturgies.

There will be new bathrooms, space for social gathering and a raised outside patio for church and school events.

The balcony will be expanded and the old stairs replaced.

The existing entry will be remodeled to provide vesting sacristies, and a new confessional and usher’s closet.

The area under the balcony will be enclosed with glass and will provide a quiet place at the back of the church.

The structure of the church is sound and will not require any additional repair or support.

The steeple will need a new sheathing but structurally looks good.

All the stained-glass windows in the church have been cared for and are generally in good shape. They will be removed and repaired as necessary. The frames for the windows will have to be rebuilt. All the stained-glass windows will be used.

A new heating and air conditioning system will be installed in the church. It will be a dual heat pump/ furnace system, which will be cost effective and efficient to heat and cool the church. This system will be installed in the attic of the church.

Fire alarm and fire suppression will be installed in the church, and it will be fully sprinklered throughout.

Audio improvements are being researched to provide great sound quality within the Church. Improvements being considered include modern speaker systems aimed at the pews, microphone updates, appropriate AV component upgrades and wireless/ Bluetooth integration system for personal hearing systems. Speakers also will be added to the narthex entry and on the outside patio.

Projection improvements are being researched for costs and possible inclusion.

Faith was demonstrated by the actions of countless martyrs who refused to deny God at the cost of their lives. Faith was also demonstrated by Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel: “May it be done

Living faith “work[s] through charity.” (Rom 1:17; Gal 5:6 ). “Faith apart from works is dead.” (Jas 2:26 ). When faith is deprived of hope and love, faith does not fully unite the believer to Christ. (CCC, 1815).

The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it: “So every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” (Mt 10:32-33; CCC, 1816).

Pope Francis declared 2025 as a Jubilee year of hope, repeating Romans 5:5 that “Hope does not disappoint.” Hope is God’s gift which carries us forward, our eyes fixed on heaven, desiring eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the grace of the Holy Spirit. In this Jubilee year, Pope Francis urges that hope be offered to the sick, to the young, and to the elderly – especially grandparents, migrants, families, prisoners, and the poor.

           CHARITY AND CATHOLIC TEACHING

Charity is the highest form of love. Charity is described in our scriptures and in the Catechism as love. For example, St. Paul teaches:

            “Charity is patient and kind, charity is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Charity does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Charity bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. If I . . . have not charity, I am nothing. Whatever my privilege, service, or even virtue, if I . . . have not charity, I gain nothing. So faith, hope, charity abide, these three. But the greatest of these is charity.”  (1 Cor.13:1-13;

           CCC 1825-1826

           ).

Loving acts of charity, above all else, demonstrate our love of God and our unselfish love for our neighbor. Charity is the first of the theological virtues and is superior to all the virtues.(

           CCC, 1822)

. When all virtues become superfluous, because they are no longer necessary to the citizens of the Kingdom, charity alone will remain.

Jesus makes charity the new commandment: “that you love one another as I have loved you.” (Jn 15:9,12). The Lord asks us to love as he does, even our enemies. (Rom 5:10). Charity “binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Col 3:14, CCC 1827). Charity calls us to act with kindness and mercy, not out of fear or expectation of reward. (

. The ultimate demonstration of charity was Jesus’ dying for each one of us on the cross.

The fruits of charity are joy, peace, and mercy (
Prudence is classically understood as a practical wisdom that empowers one to be good and to act well in daily affairs. In Catholic theology, prudence is a cardinal virtue that is defined as "right reason in action," enabling individuals to discern the true good (God’s will) in every circumstance and choose the right means to achieve it. By its nature, prudence is concerned with the seeking and attainment of wisdom and truth. It's considered the "mother of all virtues" as it guides the other virtues towards a good end.

To acquire prudence, choose to learn from your mistakes, learn from others, and patiently consider your choices. Then, be decisive and act. Decisiveness shouldn’t be confused with haste, but prudence frees us from the paralysis of perfectionism. See, Jody Benson, Catholic Women in Business

The food pantry, Helping Hands program, volunteering on committees and other church ministries offer ways for all of us to practice “good” through acts of Charity for those in need, and to foster Hope for ourselves and others as we work toward the future. What are ministries you can support and participate in that will help you become the “virtuous person who is happy to practice” acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity?

Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. Justice toward God is called the “virtue of religion.” Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships, the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good. The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor.

, temperance is presented as a crucial aspect of individual and social life. It promotes a lifestyle that resists the excesses of consumerism and encourages respect for creation and the needs of all by:

Promoting the Common Good: By encouraging responsible consumption and the responsible use of resources, temperance helps ensure that everyone has access to what they need for a dignified life.

Building a Just Society: Temperance is linked to the pursuit of social justice. By encouraging moderation and self-discipline, it helps to create a society where resources are shared equitably and where individuals prioritize the well-being of others.

Cultivating Social Harmony: Temperance fosters social harmony by promoting respectful interactions and discouraging destructive behaviors stemming from uncontrolled passions. For example, the Church's social teaching emphasizes that temperance with words is vital for maintaining healthy relationships, especially within families.

In essence, temperance is not simply a private virtue but a social one that contributes to the building of a more just, sustainable, and harmonious society.

How often do I pray for help to moderate my desires? Do I practice temperance within my family, model it in the workplace, and promote it within my community?

We are excited to report that St. Columba is continuing our preliminary work to move ahead with design plans for Phase 1 of our Master Plan. As a reminder, these campus improvements will include necessary site infrastructure upgrades, a new church narthex, and fire suppression in the Hauser Building.

My first church attendance was sleeping in a bassinet in the back of our little Baptist church in Seattle. I grew through nursery, Sunday School, children's church, adult church, and got baptised on Easter at age 11. We moved and kept going to church, through youth groups, college campus ministry, worship choirs, small groups. I never stopped going, but still I wanted more. So I went to seminary, learned more scripture and ways to worship. I served in Baptist and Methodist churches. Still... God led my heart and mind deeper into liturgy, sacraments and history. At age 35, I came home, into the Catholic Church. I kept going to church, of course, and being involved in parish and diocese as called. Some years I have been on the OCIA team. It feels like being at the heart of the mission of the Church. Every year, OCIA becomes a small group of people really sharing how God is moving in their lives. I learn from, and am so inspired by, these Jubilee Pilgrims of Hope!

I’m a cradle Catholic, blessed to be part of vibrant parishes throughout my life that have formed me in faith and deepened my relationship with God. My journey has had three main stages. First, growing up in a faith-filled home, my parents’ example instilled in me a love for prayer, sacraments, community, and service; they were always involved in something going on at the parish. Our home was where many landed for coffee, prayer and faith sharing. Seeds of faith were planted that shaped the foundation of my faith life. Then, with my husband, Jason, raising our three daughters in the faith became our focus. My mother always said, “Faith is caught more than taught,” so I knew it had to start with me. In discerning my gifts of where God was calling me individually to serve Him, I was led to the ministry of catechist, Catholic education, and campus and youth ministry. Serving young people has been a passion throughout my adult life. Now, I’ve been working in Faith Formation at our parish for nearly two years. This work has been a great gift; I’m grateful to walk alongside people of all ages and stages in their faith journey through OCIA, small groups, family formation, sacramental preparation, youth ministry, and school ministry. OCIA has been especially inspiring because you not only witness conversion, but you also experience it yourself. It truly has renewed my own faith, which is something I believe all Catholics, especially cradle Catholics, should experience. All are welcome on the OCIA journey!

After the Holy Spirit led me to the truth of the Catholic faith and the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, God confirmed me into the Catholic Church through Fr. Kevin on July 8, 2018. I am a seasoned lawyer who God has called to use my legal skills as a Catholic evangelist to help guide people into the Catholic faith and create missionary disciples. Through the use of science, philosophy, logic, scripture and historical evidence, I love to show people the truth of God, Christianity and Catholicism, and help them grow in faith. I have given theology talks on science and faith, the historical reliability of the New Testament, the Holy Land, the Eucharist, the Holy Spirit, and other Catholic topics. Geoff leads small groups, is a catechist for OCIA, and a member of Parish Council.

Pray for the Catechumens and Candidates

             – Lift them up in prayer as they prepare to enter the Church.

            Participate in the Rites

             - Attend Masses when the rites occur. The dates, mass times, and explanations are in the Spotlight and Bulletin.

            Send a Note of Encouragement

             – A simple card can mean so much in letting them know they are supported.

            Become a Sponsor

             – It isn’t too early to let your parish know you are willing to “walk with one” as a sponsor. This vital role allows you to accompany someone on their journey into the Church, sharing faith, encouragement, and support.

             – Extend an invitation to those who may be curious about the faith or in need of spiritual direction.

In case you haven’t noticed RCIA has a new name: OCIA - Order of Christian Initiation for Adults. While the ministry remains unchanged, this new title more accurately reflects the original Latin translation and emphasizes the ongoing faith formation of those entering the Catholic Church, rather than focusing solely on a single "rite." OCIA is a spiritual journey in which the parish community accompanies those seeking to grow closer to Christ through the Sacraments of Initiation. God’s grace is at work in every step, shaping both the candidates and those sharing the journey with them as mentors and friends.

The Elect of our parish have entered the Period of Purification and Enlightenment, the final stage of preparation before receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. This time is marked by deeper prayer, reflection, and spiritual conversion as they seek to be more fully conformed to Christ. They are called to an interior renewal, turning away from sin and embracing the light of Christ more completely.

OCIA has several milestones that are celebrated within Sunday liturgy. During the scrutinies, a period of intense prayer on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, the priest and the people pray over the candidates in the final days of their journey to the reception of the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. These three Sundays utilize readings of Year A from the Gospel of John: the story of the Samaritan Woman, the story of the Man Born Blind, and the story of the Raising of Lazarus.

As a parish, we are invited to walk alongside them in prayer and support:

            Pray for the Elect -

that they may be strengthened in faith and prepared to receive the sacraments.

Life and Dignity of the Human Person

Our Sacred Scripture begins:

“In the beginning…. God created man in his image; in the image of God he created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

So our Catholic Social Teaching begins:

The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia. The value of human life is being threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research, and the use of the death penalty. The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right to life by finding increasingly effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.

Excessive economic and social disparity between individuals and peoples of the one human race is a source of scandal and militates against social justice, equity, human dignity, as well as social and international peace'." (

They poison human society, but they do more harm to those who practice them than those who suffer from the injury." (Second Vatican Council,

Catholics believe in the sanctity of life. The Church does not allow euthanasia or doctor assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. These patients should be kept as free from pain as possible until they die a natural death with dignity.

Catholic hospice and palliative /comfort care patients can guide their own healthcare as long as they are mentally and physically capable of doing so. The Catholic Church does not promote preserving physical life at all costs (i.e. extraordinary care where the treatment would be futile or overly burdensome -

OVERVIEW: The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society—in economics and politics, in law and policy—directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.

The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected, and responsibilities are met. Rights and Responsibilities provides that every person, no matter where they are living or their circumstance, deserves access to food, water, shelter, and other things that guarantee a person can live with decency and dignity. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

Hence, to claim one's rights and ignore one's duties, or only half fulfill them, is like building a house with one hand and tearing it down with the other." St. John XXIII, Peace on Earth [

Here are a few words from Scripture to guide our path:

John 13:34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.

Matthew 7:12. In everything …treat people the same way you want them to treat you, … this is the law and the prophets.

John 15:13. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

The 4th theme of Catholic social Teaching is Option for the Poor and Vulnerable. A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the

The poor of whom the Gospels speak are not only those without money. They are those on the peripheries of society — the ignored, powerless, oppressed, discriminated against, immigrants and refugees, racial minorities, the imprisoned, the elderly, the sick, those not yet born and even abused creation itself.

Pope Francis speaks of Matthew 25 (“What you did for the least of my brethern, you did for me”) and the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12), as the "twin pillars of Christianity." The Beatitudes remind us that true happiness resides in putting God first by being merciful, meek, humble, poor in spirit, clean of heart, peacemakers, mourning without rebelling and hungering for righteousness.

The task of creating a good life for all members of society-the common good- is never perfectly realized. Because of the pervasive temptations of individualism and self-interest, one of the most pressing demands of the common good is the persistent conversion of hearts in the realization that we do not exist for ourselves.

Charity and social justice are integral parts of Catholic social teaching. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops uses the display of “Two Feet of Love in Action“ to demonstrate how charity and justice differ. This display describes how charity addresses immediate needs to aid individuals, while social justice includes removing root causes of the problems and improving social structures to better serve the “Common Good.” This includes expanding access to affordable housing, improving the educational system, supporting living wages, protecting the unborn, supporting environmental protection laws, promoting peace and providing international assistance. There is a need for both charity and justice, and as we seek to follow Christ, we are called to do both.

If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.” (p. 1)

(No. 274). Work is an essential expression of human dignity, and work is a sacred space for flourishing. The Church’s primary interest is people and their well-being. The Compendium describes work as a fundamental right and that workers have certain rights. These include: the right to a just wage, to rest, to a safe work environment, to unemployment assistance, to senior pensions, to health care, to disability insurance, to parental leave and benefits, to organize and to strike (Nos. 301, 302, 304). The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers - Part 4

On May 9, 2014, Pope Francis renewed his call on global leaders to redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor. Railing against an “economy of exclusion,” Francis called for a state-led global initiative to close the widening gap between rich and poor through redistribution. On 1/31/2022, Pope Francis noted the role of taxation in such redistribution, and said that done well, taxation “is a sign of legality and justice,” and to achieve the common good, taxation “must favor the redistribution of wealth, looking out for the dignity of the poorest who risk always ending up crushed by the powerful.”

In 1986, America’s Catholic Bishops issued a Pastoral Letter on Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy noting that although “Catholic social teaching does not require absolute equality in the distribution of income and wealth,” it entails “a strong presumption against extreme inequality of income and wealth as long as there are poor, hungry, and homeless people in our midst (185).” The Bishops also stated here that the Church should be “exemplary” in terms of providing a living wage with social benefits to all its many branches of employees.

“Income inequality, a reality that has worsened precipitously in recent decades, has drawn criticism from church leaders.” (Don Clemmer, Catholic News Service”). Noting the “rising economic inequality”, the U.S. Bishops’ 2013 Labor Day Statement said that current imbalances “demand boldness in promoting a just economy … by creating jobs that pay a living wage and share with workers some profits of the company.”

Use your God-given gifts to “work” as a volunteer to aid others (church, community, schools, nursing homes, jails).

The 6th theme of Catholic Social Teaching is Solidarity. Solidarity is “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to . . . the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.”

Solidarity means much more than engaging in sporadic acts of generosity. It means thinking and acting in terms of community. It means that the lives of all are prior to the appropriation of goods by a few. It also means combatting the structural causes of poverty, inequality, the lack of work, land, and housing, the denial of social and labor rights. (

Solidarity requires that in our prayer and in our political engagement, those who are weak, vulnerable, and most in need receive preferential concern.

Pope Paul VI taught, “If you want peace, work for justice.” Psalm 72 teaches that living in right relationship with others brings peace. 1 Corinthians 12 cites that “If one member of Christ’s body suffers, all suffer.” Solidarity requires a personal recognition of the inclusiveness of the Body Of Christ so that Justice for all is achieved.

Jesus was asked, “Who is my Neighbor?” We know His response as the parable of The Good Samaritan. Who acted as Neighbor? The one who showed compassion/mercy without any boundaries of tribe, faith or social standing. That’s Solidarity.

and all of God’s creation as a requirement of our faith. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.

As people of faith, we are convinced that "the earth is the Lord’s and all it holds." (Ps 24:1) Our Creator has given us the gift of creation: the air we breathe, the water that sustains life, the fruits of the land that nourish us, and the entire web of life without which human life cannot flourish. All of this God created and found "very good.” (Gen 1:31) Every creature and the material world say something of God, and nature is a continuing revelation of the Divine.

Human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbor, and with the earth itself. The human environment and the natural environment deteriorate together; and the gravest effects of all attacks on the environment are suffered by the poorest. Justice is served when we hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. [

Once we lose our humility, and become enthralled with the possibility of limitless mastery over everything, we end up harming society and the environment. The human person grows more, matures more, and is sanctified more to the extent that he or she enters into relationships, going out from themselves to live in communion with God, with others, and with all creation.
